A one-day workshop with Steve Branfman and Eduardo Lazo.

Steven and Eduardo will demonstrate their vessel forming methods and their personal styles of surface decoration using a variety of glaze and non-glaze techniques and practices. Eduardo will show his specialized “upside down” throwing technique where forms are created in an inverted fashion. He will also combine handbuilding and throwing methods. Steven will demonstrate a variety of forms and throwing techniques such as throwing off the hump, altering shapes, surface design and manipulation, addition of dry materials to clay surfaces, inlaying colored glass, narrow neck bottle forms, expanding forms from the inside, coil and throw, large forms and platters. Both artists will show their trimming and finishing techniques.

Branfman will also demonstrate the choice, combinations, application and use of a variey of glazes including raku glaze, stoneware glaze, commerical low fire glaze, underglazes, overglazes, slips, washes, dry mixtures and multiple firing all in the context of low fire raku firing and post firing methods. Lazo will discuss and demonstrate selected ferric chloride techniques. Both artists will explain and demonstrate the creative uses of kiln control including temperature and atmosphere management, recognizing proper glaze melt and post-firing methods.
