gowanus2 Mike Howard: Monumental Works

Mike Howard: Monumental Works

March 2- April 8, 2012

Opening Reception: First Friday March 2, 2012 | 5:30-7:30pm

Mike Howard is a painter known for his work with pop culture themes capturing contemporary tragedy, but this time he´s working on a project close to home; these are monumental plein air paintings done on the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn two blocks from his studio. He says of the project, “I´m working on something totally different. [It] is on the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. People are trying to clean it up. There´s a bridge over the canal and plein air painters are always there.” He is counted among them.
It´s been a diverse journey, he did window displays for department stores in New York City, set design work for the late Richard Avedon, which led him to start a studio to build sets and backdrops for fashion photography.. Howard has also been a house painter, which he said helped him with the huge paintings he´s doing now. “I painted houses and was used to getting up in a ladder. It seems that art students carry their art in portfolios for convenience. I think that it would be the best thing for college students to paint monumental work.” Mike splits his time between homes in Brooklyn, NY and Hurtsboro, AL. Educated at Columbus State University, University of Georgia, and Whitney Museum of American Art´s Independent Study Program, he has also spent time in the U.S. Marine Corps, 1963-67, taught art at Columbus High School and been adjunct art professor at Rutgers University.

Opening Reception: First Friday March 2, 2012 | 5:30-7:30pm

Winner of GoggleWorks 2011 Juried Show Inside Outside, Carolyn´s works are created from words that are developed into a radial designs that are a part of the images she creates. The process of transforming meaning by removing or rearranging the letters in the word engages her sense of play. The paintings begin around a single thought or phrase but ultimately become more about the process of painting and the satisfaction derived in making a significant line moving in and out of undulating patterns of color. Carolyn was educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA.

March 2- April 8, 2012

Opening Reception: First Friday March 2, 2012 | 5:30-7:30pm

Gerry Tuten´s work is a stammering, a seeking, a venture inside and outside of herself. She thrives on change and challenge in her painting. Intensely curious, she loves exploring the micro and macro levels of the natural ecology. Victoria Donahue of the Philadelphia Inquirer says Tuten´s paintings have: "an intense sense of freedom and joy she feels in the physical action and mark-making that goes into energetically painting. With this agile, fresh, and vital approach, she has given her art a fresh face more intensely human and spontaneous". Born in Pittsburgh, Gerry has received degrees from Parsons, University of the Arts, and Tyler School of Art. She has been awarded residencies in MA, VT and Beijing. Her work is represented by Atlantic Gallery in NYC and Carspecken Scott in Wilmington.

Caroline Rust: The Tints That Glow

RUST Preserving Traditions installation view Caroline Rust: The Tints That Glow

March 2- April 8, 2012

Opening Reception: First Friday March 2, 2012 | 5:30-7:30pm

The Tints That Glow embodies installations of paintings with objects. Based upon an exploration of femininity and its evasive characteristics, the emphasis of current works has unfolded into a deeper examination of the feminine world, the woman´s identity, and her pursuit for a sense of self. These works investigate the internal lives of women and focus upon the woman´s journey through life and the paths she walks. Through this study of objects meaningful to women´s lives and with the hope of awakening viewers to reflect upon the paths of women, Caroline aims to share a new landscape about women; a different type of history - their inner worlds juxtaposed to their things. Caroline received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from East Carolina University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Winthrop University both with a concentration in painting. Caroline is a member of the National Association of Women Artists in New York, NY and is a recent recipient of a Regional Artist Grant from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Arts and Science Council. Her artwork is exhibited annually in shows across the United States

silladar Mindscapes: Robb Kramer

November 10-January 6, 2012

Opening Reception: First Friday December 7, 2012 | 5:30-7:30pm

Robb Kramer returns to the Reading area after a hiatus of over two decades to launch a comprehensive exhibit at the GoggleWorks. Robb says of his journey: “My childhood was spent in Sinking Spring, PA, perfecting drawings with a specific narrative, whether it was ink drawings of barbarians or paintings of peaceful llamas there was always a focus, some story I wanted to tell. But as my work matured and I moved throughout the country, I found a more exciting challenge was removing any narrative from my work and allowing color and atmosphere to become the focus. People find something new each time they look, like watching clouds morphing in the sky.”
Now living in San Francisco, Kramer´s Art is collected nationwide, recently he expanded into fashion, co-founding Mythaus, a design company featuring couture silk dresses hand dyed by the Artist and inspired by his paintings. Kramer´s sculptural work got the attention of Hollywood and as lead sculptor/set design, was prominently featured in the 2009 Oscar nominated, stop-motion animated film Coraline. He is presently one of the Art Directors on Henry Selick´s latest Disney/Pixar stop-motion feature.
