Decapite, Clark DeCapite

Clark DeCapite

May 6 - June 14, 2010

Opening Reception: First Thursday | May 6
5:30 - 7:30pm

Through the use of replicated forms taken from dated, often antiquated objects, Clark DeCapite attempts to represent the relationship between the existing and the existed. Much like snapshots taken out of the context of time, each object represents a moment within its previous reality. Primarily working in glass, he attempts to relate the individual objects to an ethereal realm with the aid of the material´s transparent yet structural qualities. Through the representational compiling of moments in time, he creates a new structure, dictated by each individual unit placement in the whole.

Life Patterns
etchings, collagraphs, watercolors

Artists Statement
My work explores naturally occurring patterns and the abstract elements within them. Microcosms and macrocosms are a recurring subject in my prints. Closely cropped images of microcosmic worlds create abstract compositions, exploiting the abstract patterns. Etchings and Collagraphs allow me to explore imagary in an abstract and painterly way. The images are simplified, but they still keep a close link to the real world. Negative space is as important as positive space because it adds to and supports the structure that is being represented. I am influenced by the simplicity of Japanese block prints, and the sculptures of Harry Bertoia, who also referenced natural structures and patterns in his work.
Branches against a sky, the bend of a twig, the complex geometry of a pinecone, or the random linear patterns seen in arial satellite images inspire me. The subjects I choose emit an internal structure that can be focused on by simplifying the extranious detail and documenting the abstract pattern. The individual unit is lost, as it becomes a part of the whole. The final print creates its own environment for the natural pattern to live in. This new abstracted environment is the ultimate goal of my work.
Recently, I have been juxtaposing patterns of human cellular structure, with satellite views of familiar neighborhoods. The way that humans sculpt and mold the earth, forever changing the earth´s surface to suit their lives interests me. By juxtaposing these "neighborhood" and "home" views with cellular cross sections, I am commenting on the traits of human nature. Progress and order is in our very cellular makeup.
